THE ODYSSEY OF MIKHAIL PICHUGIN AND THE BOATLAND “BAIKAT”

In early August 2024, three adventurers — Mikhail Pichugin, his brother, and his nephew — set out on a sea journey from the Khabarovsk region toward Sakhalin.
Their vessel: a Boatland Baikat-470 inflatable catamaran, built in Ulan-Ude by Boatland LLC and purchased for a long-awaited family expedition to the remote and majestic Shantar Islands.
The voyage began calmly. The ocean was kind, the wind light, and the “Baikat” handled each wave with confidence and ease.
But as often happens at sea, the weather turned suddenly — and the crew soon found themselves adrift in the vast, cold expanse of the Okhotsk Sea.
Endurance Against the Elements
For more than two months, the “Baikat” faced what few small vessels ever experience — relentless wind, freezing rain, and waves rising higher than the deck.
Yet the catamaran never capsized, never lost buoyancy, and remained structurally sound.
Its multi-chamber design, reinforced seams, and carefully balanced hull kept it afloat even when the sea was at its most unforgiving.
“It was unbelievable,” Mikhail recalled. “The boat stood like a fortress in the middle of the ocean.”
During those weeks adrift, the men collected rainwater, rationed supplies, and held on to the belief that rescue would come.
For Mikhail, what kept him alive was the thought of his family waiting at home — a reason strong enough to overcome the vastness of the sea.
